A cidade de São Cristóvão foi fundada em 1590, sendo a quarta cidade mais antiga do Brasil. Em 1696, Portugal instituiu a Ouvidoria Geral de Sergipe em São Cristóvão, trazendo para o local todo um aparato administrativo, como Corregedor, Escrivão, Inquiridor, Contador e Distribuidor. A cidade foi conhecida como Sergipe D’El Rey até o século XVIII e permaneceu como sede da única comarca de Sergipe até 1832.
